The Vow / Le Voeu
The Vow is an autobiographical dance solo by Jalianne Li retracing her journey over the past 10 years with her locks. She uses the movements and sculptural potential of her 4-foot-long locks (commonly known as dreadlocks) combined with her ongoing exploration of facial movement to examine what her locks have taught her, her feelings towards them, and their spiritual significance to her.
The book of Leviticus in the Torah describes The Nazirite Creed: a person makes a vow to God and refrains from cutting their hair until the vow has been fulfilled. Some believe these Nazirites would have worn locks. Ten years ago, Li made a vow to God and, inspired by The Nazirite Creed, locked her hair as a daily reminder of that vow. As a result, themes from her faith journey have become an integral part of the work.
